I Don't know where to begin - In Shock

This is only going to be a short post because I feel like an absolute idiot for what has happened to me today and I have brought it all on myself.

To say I have been stitched up and hung out to dry is an underestimation and I have been suspended from work on full pay pending investigation because of it.

It's just seems so stupid to even comprehend this and I am at this moment in time having great difficulty in doing just that.

The day before payday last month on the suggestion of a member of staff I borrowed £2 quid from the petty cash for my lunch.

Now the mistake I obviously made was putting an IOU in the tin because I got called into an informal discussion today to ask if I have done this and why, I admitted straight away I had done and stupidly was advised by another member of staff to do it.

The said member of staff has photocopied the IOU and given it to my boss.

Now I have no idea where I stand, I have been asked to provide a statement but I really don't know what to say it's my word against her's.

I need to desperately find another job before I have to face disciplinary because even if it comes out that I still have a job at the end of it, I can't possibly carry on working there after this knowing I have been well and truly stitched up by a member of staff.

I can't even say I am gutted, I am just in shock and totally embarrassed by the fact I could be accused of theft for the sake of £2.

I have never stolen anything from anyone in my life and I don't know what to say to anyone about this, I can't even admit it to my family and friends I am just going to have to feign sickness until the hearing.

Any advice would be greatly received because I really don't know where to go from here.

Have you tried the Citizens Advise bureau? For any hearing that you attend at work you can be accompanied by another member of staff or a union rep (if you are in a union). They (the company) have to follow their diciplinary procedures to the letter and they also have to pay you whilst the investigation takes place. They also have to take into account your previous conduct and act accordingly. I know that none of this really helps, but am thinking of you x

Thanks Catz in all honesty at the moment I just feel completely shell shocked...I have applied for five other jobs tonight though just in case..xx

Emma you have not committed theft, lets make that totally clear ok!
The definition of theft is :-
If someone dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention to permanently deprive the other of it, then he is guilty of theft.

You were NOT dishonest and you had no intention to permanently deprive anyone of it. You may well have breached some company policy but you are definitely NOT a thief!
If they say otherwise let me know and I will educate them.
How fucking petty are they?

PC - Thanks for that it's appreciated, I just feel so bloody stupid over it all..xx

Emma - Agree with both cat and PC. Honey, you LEFT AN IOU!!!! It's not like you weren't going to repay it!!!!!!

But I don't blame you for looking for another job, if you have to put up with a staff member who would do that to you!

Hey, look on the bright side. You've got paid time off to look for a better job, and you'll also get cleared of this stupidity in the meantime.

Thanks Vi - I think that's what has upset me more than anything that another human being could be so callous..xx

emma, pc south west is bang on, you have not committed a crime, write down what he said in your statement. I was you, I would say what you have said here, its seems to me that she told you it was ok to do that, and you did, then she photocopied it and gave it to your boss. Thats another crime I am sure pc south west could explain that better, but it reaks of a set, maybe she was jealous of you.
My advice would be:
State all the above,
also:
1. Was it made clear to you that you can't get a sub from the petty cash. (if no, why not)
2. Was you led to believe by your work friend, that this was common pratice. (if yes then, what did you do wrong).
3. Was there other subs in the iou tin when you put yours in there?
4. Did your friend put one in to?
5. Did your friend say she does it all time.
I am not saying to tell lies, but examine every angle.
Was it a form of intisement, if she led you to beleive it was common pratice, then she is just as responsible.

Emma,

First off some hugs to you from me and Alfie xxx

Wow, second what a low life piece of scum the other employee is who reported you, make sure she is disciplined for lying to you and giving you the information that is was okay to borrow the £2 and put the IOU in the tin, she is involved and it’s only fair she takes her own punishment.

As for what you did your employers are obviously petty to even consider bringing this to your attention, if you have borrow £20 then god I could understand it but £2!

I too was once suspended on full pay from my job, for giving my opinion of a customer {I called him a liar} in the notes on screen, I was not the only one, first one lad was pulled up so he dragged me into it, and when I was pulled up some months after it happened I asked why the manager who had written similar was not being suspended, I know it was a form of grassing but I felt so angry over it and how I was being treated. I stood my ground, enjoyed the two weeks off work with pay and watched eagerly as the said manager returned to work after her holidays only to be suspended also! Whoops, still we still remain friends to this day!

As for looking for another job, don’t be to hasty, tell the truth and that includes to the teams you manager and make it clear from the start about the other member of staff who advised you it was okay, make sure she get’s what she deserves!

WTF.....That's disgusting Emma, not just your fellow worker but the company! Just when you thought you'd really turned the corner at work too.
You will be cleared and get another better job and believe me what goes around comes around to the alleged friend at work!
The CAB is a good idea or ACAS and my bet is that they will actually end up begging you to stay!!

Wayne - First off there is no evidence against anyone else you me she made sure of that, they lie and cheat all the time that lot so it won't be any great hardship to them to cover their own backs over this one... thanks for your concern..xx

Ally - Thanks for your support also, I just don't think I want to be put in the position again with this employee, I wrote about her a few weeks ago and deleted it quickly but this is someone who emptied out the contents of a business jiffy bag and left all the patients details on show to use for herself even put it through the bloody franking machine...see what I am up against..xx

What a great bunch of support you all are, Si - I am ringing acas in the morning, I will let you know what they say...I am just plucking up the courage to tell my mum in case she rings me at work tomorrow.

I am so very ashamed about this..xx

Lady in red said...

why should you be ashamed to tell your mum. what you did was not unreasonable. The advice you have been given is good. My first thoughts were that this person is obviously jealous of you.

I think if I was in your position I would find it hard to work with these people again but if you can secure the job and you feel you can work with them again tat just shows what great character you have.

hugs

Lady - After a conversation with Acas this morning I don't think there is much chance of me working with these people again, looks like I am guilty as charged because even if I don't go to the disciplinary they can still inform another employer in a reference that I have been suspected of it.

The chances of me getting another job are highly remote I would think...xx

Oh Em, that is a really shitty thing to do & have done to you! £2!!!!! You borrowed £2 & left an IOU which proves, as PCSW said, that you intended to put it back & it was only a borrow. Bloody hell, how damn petty are they?!

Hugs to you hun & I hope it works out ok xoxoxoxox

Two effin pound FFS! *shakes head in disgust*

I think you were set up... That is about the worst piece of advice from a coworker I've ever heard!

It probably would have been better to just ask a coworker for the money... rather than the till...

But seeing that it's all done... all you have to do now is take the consequences :( Still.. I think it was really bad advice.

Oh Honey, I am so sorry about this. First of all, You did not steal. People who steal DO NOT leave an IOU. Who the hell is the boss that they don't see that?? If someone took something and wanted to get away with it and keep it they certainly don't leave something telling you they took it and owe you for it!!!! I am furious that they are putting you through this.
I am so very sorry. I will keep you in my prayers that something very good comes out of this.

I am in shock by this. I can't believe something so innocent could be taken so out of hand.
