I sent this in an email earlier

To Vi in the hope of shining some light for her, this is however a true story....

I just wanted to let you know that I used to see a guy in the special services so I can completely understand what you are going through. I actually tried very hard not to start the relationship because I could see it was fraught from the start, but we lasted three years even though he could disappear off the radar for months at a time.

It was when email and mobiles hadn't been around long and they didn't have the security they have now, he used to have to change his mobile nearly every week.

I never really found out what he did when he wasn't around but I have read enough about others to know it can't have been pleasant, anyway what kept us alive was our letters and sometimes emails and the text messages, text messages where harder to pick up security wise it was when he called he usually had to bin the phone straight afterwards.

You have the advantage where hopefully at least you will be able to keep in touch.

I will also tell you he was the only real love of my life and it was very hard to let him go when he finally got transferred to the states.

Because of how delicate his job was I could only go with him if I was prepared to give up everything here, I couldn't do it and I chose to stay with friends and family in the end.

I really don't regret that at all, but I do remember my mum saying when I first met him, "If you have found the love of your life, hold on to him, enjoy every moment because it won't last forever, she was so right and I will still love him in some way until the end of time.

Wow haven't told anyone that tale for a long time, just thought I would share it.

If any of you have read my poetry in my archives this summed us up perfectly!!

Despite advances in technology, some things don't change. One of those is the 'not knowing' factor for those back home. I'm sure Chief will do his best to keep in touch with Vi, but it ain't gonna be easy. It's good she has somone who understands her predicament.
