Between the Devil and the deep blue sea

Last night after rugby we all went to the pub and even though we lost again!!! we had a good night dancing, singing and drinking.

About 12am there were a few of us stood outside the front of the pub which to paint a picture is on a major junction on one of the main roads into the town centre.

We had been out there a couple of minutes when a car pulled up on the opposite side of the road and two lads got out one black one white, now for the record I am not racist in the slightest but what followed was a very nasty assault, they jumped on two lads who where walking past the pub on the way back from town and started fighting, one of our lads went to join in so I ran across and pulled him out of the way, it wasn't going on for more than a minute when the police pulled up and separated them.

I was still holding on to our lad who had witnessed it all and wanted to tell the police but he was swearing and I didn't want him to get locked up.

One of the lads who got attacked had his ear bitten by the black lad and I mean really bitten there was blood all over and when asked if he wanted to press charges he said he did, the couple who got out of the car claimed there was history between the four of them but the lads who where attacked said they had never seen them before in their lives.

Once they had decided to press charges the copper in charge advised them they would be arrested and locked up for the night and be allowed to give a statement in the morning at which point they would decide their penalty.

Now I can see the point of view of the police, they have seen a snapshot of four lads fighting as they sat at the lights and haven't seen the start of it so maybe they do have to arrest them all, but the poor lad with his ear half hanging off can't get anything done about it unless he is prepared to spend the night in the cells, now in my opinion he should have been in A&E never mind a cell but because the lads attacked where both marines and had only come home yesterday neither wanted to get locked up.

So they dropped the charges and the copper took all our names as witnesses but nothing is going to happen to them that was more than obvious.

So some of you in the job out there might like to confirm the reason for reported assaults being down on previous years is probably because people like the lad last night didn't want locking up for having half his ear bitten off, but the black lad gets off scott free to go and do it all over again.

So the lads got back in their car and the marines went on their way to A & E to get stitched up.

It just seems so annoying and wrong that two what appeared to be innocent lads who in all honesty defended themselves from an unexpected attack can't get the justice they deserve.

I guess from the point of view of the police its a bit like being a ref in soccer or rugby match, they have to go by what they saw. But I would have thought with you and your friends as witnesses they should have been able to work out what happened. I think it is all they could do in the face of everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Why did they need to be locked up over night anyway was it to give them time to sober up or because the police don;t have the resources to be able to deal with everyone on a busy friday night.

Not much of a welcome home for the marines.

Are you sure that the black guy wasn't Mike Tyson? After all, we know that he has a penchant for ear biting!

Ooo, what a lovely world we live in, eh?

I hope that the rest of your weekend wont be quite-so eventful, LOL

A/E was like Beruit last night!

It was full of mad, bad and dangerous to know people!

And that was just the Ambulance crews!

VBF - I know not nice..xx

LiR - I would say because they don't have the personnel to deal with it on a Friday night would be the right answer but I still think we should have been trusted by our statements..xx

Lins - I couldn't believe it either, why would you do it?..xx

KM - I can imagine..lol..xx

Some time ago I came to the opinion that our Police need to be 'accountable' for their actions and inactions. They are only judged by politicians, according to targets set by....oh yes...politicians.
I'm afraid, this is now the norm in this country.

Dickie - I kind of thought that's what you would say, it just seems so wrong though..x

I'm sure they can press charges later? Especially as the cops have the details? And SURELY the cops would have taken him to A & E first?

Vi - You would have thought so wouldn't you? But I haven't heard a thing from them so not holding out any hope and no they didn't even offer to take him to A & E just advised him he should go..x

Emma- Just my thoughts on it (and they may be a little biased lol)And I'm not quite up to snuff on laws on your side of the pond. That being said....
From what you wrote I'm going to think that neither side of the fight called the police. Someone else did (and probably stated to the dispatcher that there are 4 guys fighting and hung up)
The call for assistance tells the police that someone was upset or "disturbed" enough to call the police on the actions of all 4 individuals. If the officers arrive and see 4 guys fighting that provides an arrestable offense of disturbing the peace.
The cops do not know if any of the witnesses are biased or friends of the combatants (either side)
If they do absolutely nothing then the caller feels cheated and calls to complain that the cops are lazy do nothings. If they summons everyone and let them all go and they decide to fight again somewhere else and one of them gets seriously injured or dead then the family of the unfortunate combatant will sure as heck be lining up a lawyer to sue the officer and the department. Or the cops arrest everyone on the minor charge of disturbing the peace, they bond out for $40.00 and go for their day in court and let them sort it out there. If they are telling the truth, and the witnesses back them up and everyone is believed by the judge then the case against them can be Null Prosqued or Continued Without a Finding and their record stays clean. Yes it is an inconvienience for them but with everyone second guessing every move the police make, the police have really no choice but to handle it that way.

Enforcer - Welcome and thanks for dropping by, the police concerned where in the vicinity and just happened upon it and I do agree they only got a snapshot, I also understand that they are so under resourced they couldn't have dealt with it that night.

I think what annoyed me the most was someone was obviously injured and quite nastilly to the degree it needed stitching at least and no duty of care appeared to be offered he had to make his own way to A & E which was a good mile walk away...x

The only suggestion which was made to his care was to call an Ambulance, which in my opinion wasn't strictly necessary, it would only have taken them a couple of mins to drop him off..
